Laser Hair Removal F.A.Q’s

What is Soprano ICE?

Laser Hair Removal with the Soprano ICE works with the same concept as any other laser hair removal treatment, but does the job a lot better. The Soprano ICE targets unwanted body hair at the root of the problem – the hair follicles. Several sessions are spaced to target unwanted hair at different growth cycles, leaving you with lasting results.

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is an established hair removal treatment that has been around since the 1980s. It is used to reduce unwanted hair and can be used in almost all parts of the body, which includes: legs, armpits, upper lip, chin and the bikini line. However, it is not be used to treat hair around the eyelid or areas of skin with tattoos.

Hair colour and skin type influence the success of laser hair removal. The basic principle is that the pigment of the hair should absorb the light, not the pigment of the skin. The laser only damages the hair follicle while avoiding damage to the skin. Therefore, a contrast between hair and skin colour — dark hair and light skin — results in the best outcomes.

The risk of damage to the skin is greater when there is little contrast between hair and skin colour, but advances in laser technology have made laser hair removal an option for people who have darker skin. Laser hair removal is less effective for hair colours that don’t absorb light well: grey, red, blond and white. However, laser treatment options for light-coloured hair continue to be developed.

At DNA Health we use Alma Soprano Ice Laser machines, which are considered to be the most advanced and most effective diode laser technology.

Alma laser incorporates multiple laser wavelengths and technologies, which allows us to treat the widest range of patients and hair types all year round.

The Alma laser works by gradually heating the dermis to a temperature that effectively damages the hair follicles and prevents re-growth while avoiding injury to the surrounding tissue.

A high repetition rate of short pulses are delivered deep into the dermis, achieving high average power and therapeutically effective heat build-up, with virtually no pain.

The sweeping In-motion technique of moving the applicator repeatedly over the treatment area ensures full coverage while a cool ice tip on the laser helps prevent superficial burns and allowing for virtually painless, yet highly effective hair removal.

What can you expect?

Laser hair removal usually requires six treatments to eight treatments. The interval between treatments will vary depending on the location of the hair you are treating. On areas where hair grows quickly, such as the upper lip, the treatment might be repeated in four to six weeks. On areas of slow hair growth, such as the back, the treatment might be every 12 to 16 weeks. However, if you are carrying out treatment or full body laser, we recommend that you treat the hair every 4 weeks evenly.

For each treatment, you’ll wear special goggles to protect your eyes from the laser beam. The laser hair session can last a little as 15 minutes for small areas like ears, or up to 2.5 hours if you are doing full body.

Preparing for your laser hair removal sessions

At DNA Health we ensure we provide our clients with detailed pre and post-treatment instructions. We specifically instruct our clients to:

Before the Treatment

The area to be treated must be clean-shaven. If not, there is additional charge on some circumstances, treatment time will be reduced, potentially resulting in rescheduling of body parts
You are advised to avoid significant UV exposure 7 days prior to the laser treatment (including prolonged redness or burning). However, if you have sunbathed within the last 7 days and there are no signs of residual post-UV redness, then the therapist can proceed
If you are sunburned should wait 2 weeks before being treated to avoid additional skin damage
Please avoid sunless tanning products 7 days prior to your treatment. It is recommended to exfoliate the area to remove any residual colors
Please attend the appointment with clean skin in the area to be treated. When treating any part of your face or neck will be required to cleanse your entire face prior to your appointment

After the Treatment

Wear loose cotton clothing
Avoid touching the skin in the treatment area
Apply 100% Aloe vera ONLY to the treatment area
Avoid the gym, steam room, sauna, jacuzzi, swimming pool
When showering/bathing keep water tepid/lukewarm
Avoid all forms of physical exercise
Apply mineral makeup only after all facial laser hair removal treatments
Apply SPF50+ to all treatment areas that are exposed to UV light, cover areas where possible

In Between Sessions

Exfoliate the skin in the treatment area 4-5 days after treatment. Dead or dry skin can sometimes cause slight redness after treatment so keeping skin in tip top conditions when having laser will get the best results
When hair begins to regrow in between sessions, shaving and using hair removal creams are the only forms of hair removal that are allowed during the course of treatments
Avoid exposing treatment area to sun or sunbeds throughout the course of treatment
Apply SFP 50+ sunscreen at all times if treatment areas are exposed to UV lights
Stop applying fake tan to your treatment areas 7 days before your next session
Please inform us if you begin taking any medications throughout your course
Please attend your next session within the time frame recommended by the laser therapist

How does it work?

Laser Hair Removal with the Soprano ICE works with the same concept as any other laser hair removal treatment, but does the job a lot better. The Soprano ICE targets unwanted body hair at the root of the problem – the hair follicles. Several sessions are spaced to target unwanted hair at different growth cycles, leaving you with lasting results.

How is Soprano ICE different from other Soprano hair removal systems?

Soprano ICE is an advanced hair removal technology that incorporates multiple laser wavelengths and technologies. It offers power and versatility that allows you to treat the widest range of patients and hair types all year round.

Is hair removal with Soprano ICE really painless?

Soprano ICE uses Alma Laser’s SHR method, which is the only clinically proven method of laser hair removal that is virtually painless. The unique heating and energy delivery method effectively damages the hair follicle while preventing injury and pain to the surrounding tissue. At the same time, integrated ICETM tech cools the skin surface, preventing superficial burns and the sensation of pain.

How many treatments do patients typically need before they see results?

Depending on the patient’s skin and hair type, results are typically seen following 6 to 8 treatment sessions.

Is hair removal with Soprano ICE safe for dark skin?

Yes. While the melanin in dark skin is more sensitive to the heat used in laser treatment, Soprano ICE’s SHR method has been clinically proven to be safe and virtually painless, even for dark skin types.
Rather than exposing the hair follicle to a single high energy pulse which can cause trauma to the skin, the Soprano Ice uses gradual heating until the heat energy required to treat the area is reached.

What do I need to do prior to initial consultation?

A few days before your consultation, do not shave, wax or remove the hair in the treatment area. It helps the therapist to see the thickness and amount of hair that’s to be treated. A patch test will be performed at the initial consultation, at least 48 hours before your first treatment sessions. This is to help determine the most effective setting for the laser parameters in relation to your hair and skin type, as well as identifying if you have any adverse side effects from the laser.
